North Ealing is named after its station on Station Road, a short walk from where Queen’s Drive meets Hanger Lane. The name catches people out, because the station actually lies east of Ealing Broadway. It is on the Piccadilly line between Ealing Common and Park Royal, and West Acton on the Central line is about 550 metres away. The station building dates from 1903 and is Grade II listed; it was the one stop on its branch never rebuilt in the Holden style of the 1930s.
Ealing Village
Just off Hanger Lane stand the five blocks and two porters’ lodges of Ealing Village, built between 1934 and 1936, with a swimming pool, a tennis court and a clubhouse in the grounds. The flats were marketed at first to people working at Ealing Studios, and until 1980 they could only be rented. The estate is Grade II listed, down to its lamp posts.
Cleaning a flat there
If the porters’ lodge is staffed when we arrive, we let them know which flat we are visiting and roughly how long we will be. The machine then comes through on its trolley and stands just inside your front door. Only the hose goes further, so nothing is left lying across the shared stairs or the gardens, and with your door closed the neighbours come and go as normal.
A one-bedroom flat comes to £101 for the bedroom, the living room and the hall. If only the living room needs doing, £43 sits under the £67 minimum on its own; add a two-seater sofa at £57 and the visit comes to £100.

Houses round the station
Houses near the station are priced like any others in W5, from £36 for a bedroom and £41 for a flight of stairs, with landings at £9 apiece. Where a loft room has been added, the flight up to it can be short enough for the £29 short-flight rate, which we check on the day before we start.
For how the machine and the drying work, see carpet cleaning, and the upholstery page lists sofa prices. The estates beside Hanger Lane are on the Hanger Hill page, and Pitshanger has one too.
